It is hardly “snobbery of the highest order” to state that I don’t rate Iron Maiden. For me, personally, they are a let down. They’ve never done a song I have liked. Not one song. Sorry.
Yes, you’re right that they are a huge influence on the majority of modern metal - not all bands in general - including Deftones, that doesn’t mean I should like or rate them though. I don’t expect everyone to rate Prince, Elvis Presley, Joy Division, The Cure, etc, just because they all have made huge impacts on the musical landscape.
And, knowing me as well as you do, you should know that my musical tastes are extremely diverse. My collection includes Deftones, Metallica, and Guns N’ Roses all the way through to Jay-Z, Slick Rick, Public Enemy, and Drake by way of Mazzy Star, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Prince, The Cure, and Depeche Mode. So once again, snobbery? Really?

It is snobbery of the highest order the way you worded it… I know you don’t rate them, I am not as big a fan of them as I once was BUT I respect them and their influence on Rock and Metal Bands. From the comment I am guessing the person was informing you of their favourite artists and you said

which is saying them liking Iron Maiden lets them down in your eyes. How? in what way? they not cool coz they like them? You might not have meant it that way but that’s how that statement comes across. A more respectful way to this would have been “Not Bad, Personally not a fan of the last one” instead of saying it lets them down. Thats the point I am getting at… I’m not questioning your diversity in taste, or the music you like, or that you have to like or rate Iron Maiden. It sounded very dismissive and snobby, which I know your not.
